Chapter 9

Sloane:

“What the heck am I smelling?” Raven whined as she walked into the kitchen of the bar. “Sloane, what in the world?”

All I could offer her was a shit eating smile. I knew she was going to be so mad. It was shaping up to be one awesome week for me. I found a lady who I wanted to spend every waking hour with, and still managed to find the time to get under Raven’s skin. I let Chloe take my truck this morning to get the rest of her stuff. I wanted to go with her, just in case that bastard needed a kick in the nuts, but she said it’d probably be better if I just met her at work. I wasn’t jealous or worried, I knew by the way things had been going that she was only into me, and I couldn’t be happier. It definitely wasn’t my style to fall hard and fast for anything, but life with Chloe was easy. Our relationship was easy. She didn’t care that the business was my main focus, and she was always there to offer a hand.

“Seriously, Sloane… why does it smell like a pirate ship in here?”

Probably because of the seven bushels of Maryland Blue Crabs I had ordered for the softball picnic this weekend that Joe and I were still putting in the walk-in cooler.

“I didn’t think they were actually going to come in wooden crates,” I laughed, their pointy claws poking out from the side of the bushels as I let them drain over the sink. “Oh look! Some seaweed!”

I picked up a piece of the green slimy stuff and dangled it in her face. I knew exactly how mature I was being right now, and boy it brought back some great memories of our childhood and how I would torment my twin. She was terrified of bugs, snakes, and even dirt. She made it way too easy.

“Why are there crabs in the kitchen? How much did this cost? Are you out of your mind?”

“It’s for the softball tournament. It’s my first big catering job. I was going to do hamburgers and hotdogs but I crunched some numbers and got a great deal.”

The delivery driver walked back in the kitchen. “Who’s signing for these boxes?” he asked. “And where do you want ’em?”

“Hey, Pat!” I said. “You can leave ’em right here.” I signed my name on the electronic scanner and Raven just stood there with her hands on her hips, looking disgusted.

He brought box after box into the kitchen, and Raven began to pace.

“Sloane, what is all this?”

I tore open the top of a box and showed her the new equipment I bought. There were three freestanding portable propane steamers that could also double as deep friers, metal chafing dishes and racks to keep food hot, crab crackers, and various utensils. I could see the anger bubbling up inside of her. She was clenching her fists. She was about to blow.

“You’re nuts. Do you know how much all this costs?” she shouted.
